What is PAO
PAO stands for PostAcademisch Onderwijs, meaning Post Graduate Education. The courses are organised by the Foundation for Post Graduate Education. Responsibility for the courses is borne by the Board of Directors, which consists of representatives of the organisations listed below:
- Dutch (technical) Universities
- Representatieves of the Royal Institute of Engineers (KIVI NIRIA)
- Various professional associations
The cooperation of these organisations guarantees the scientific content and professional orientation of the courses.
PAO is a foundation working on a non-profit basis, which allows the setting of relatively low course fees.
Why PAO
PAO provides graduates with frequent opportunities to keep abreast of developments in science and technology, in order to ensure that they will be able to deliver the best possible professional performance.
Keeping up with the level of scientific knowledge is a hard economic and social necessity. To maintain their international positions, companies and organisations must maintain a high tempo in the introduction of scientific and technical developments. This innovative approach demands continuous in-service educations for the staff, including those responsible for management decisions. The alternative, which will be the introduction of new knowledge and skills by changing the staff, is detrimental for companies or other organisations: a lot of valuable experience will be lost.
Objectives PAO
The principle objectives of PAO are to ensure:
- the acquisition of new specialist knowledge and proficiency
- the deepening and widening knowledge in order to improve the job performance of professional staff
- to keep up with developments in fields of the participants
Interchange of ideas
PAO provides a unique platform for the interchange of ideas between practising professionals and scientific educators. This exchange of knowledge and experience inspires and enriches all parties.
This is achieved by:
- applying theories to practical examples
- following work methods in which practical skills are exercised
- initiating discussions
For whom is PAO
The PAO-courses are intended for university graduates and others working at graduate level.
Scope
PAO mainly focusses on civil engineering, building technology, health and environmental technology, traffic and transport technology. Most courses are lectured in Dutch, except for some international ones.
